Why do we call it Core when it doesn't include Language Arts or Math?

Traditionally, early elementary education consisted of "Readin', 'Ritin', and 'Rithmetic" — the "Three R's"... and nothing more. Knowing that, you may find it strange that Sonlight Curriculum® Core programs seem to include just about everything but those subjects.
