3 out of 5 stars by Ellen Y. on 2007-06-22
Giving this book a star rating was tough. On the one hand, it wasn't that well written. Reading the opening, I wasn't sure it was going to be at all interesting. And it's a pity it that the story was so incomplete. On the other hand, it is an amazing story, of a woman who saw the poverty and sickness in the Kentucky mountains and single handedly did something about it. Once we got past the slightly boring opening, my daughter drank this up, even when poor Lily couldn't be saved. I think we both regretted when the book was over. I would have liked to read much more.

I loved this book, my children did not understand it, and it did not hold their attention. After I was done with the whole thing, I believe the only thing they learned was "that girl was nice and she was a nurse like mommy." I was dissappointed that such a beautiful and wonderful book would be wasted at this level. It sits on my shelf, waiting until my children get older.

A touching story that, in my opinion, is inappropriate for Kindergarteners. Many of the detailed descriptions and stories brought me to tears. If they had this kind of impact on me as an adult, I am positive that my daughter is not ready for such detail. I think this would be a great reader when studying American History in 3rd or 4th grade, but definitely not now. Don't get me wrong - I want my daughter to read this book eventually, just not for a few more years.

I thought this book would not be that great for my 5 and 7-year-old girls based on the reviews, but they both loved it. We briefly talked about the setting and time period before we started. The stories really touched my 7-year-old in that she wants to grow up to serve others. She thinks Mary is a hero.
